Treasury Yields Hit a 16-Year High and Bitcoin Pays the Price
coindesk coindesk cryptobriefing
What happened. US Treasury yields pushed to their highest level since 2007 as a global bond rout deepened alongside oil prices above $100 a barrel. Bitcoin fell back through $84,000 and Dogecoin shed 8%, reversing a run that had taken BTC to seven-month highs earlier in the week.
Why it matters. Rising yields tighten the risk-asset discount rate and strengthen the dollar, two direct headwinds for crypto. The timing is awkward: the Fear and Greed Index sits at 71 and has climbed 21 points in seven days, meaning the market was leaning heavily long just as the macro backdrop turned.
The catch. The selloff arrived on the same day as bitcoin’s $16 billion quarterly options expiry, a call-heavy book that analysts had flagged as supportive above $87K-88K resistance. That pin level now looks distant, and the macro pressure may persist if oil and yields stay elevated through the weekend.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs swing back to positive annual flows. US-listed spot bitcoin ETFs have flipped to net positive for the year after a $4.6 billion rebound in inflows, with BlackRock’s IBIT leading the pack by hundreds of millions. Analysts at K33, Nexo and 21Shares flagged the surge as institutional demand catching up, though they noted $87K-88K as the next meaningful resistance band before the macro turn.

FTX and Alameda wallets move $75 million in ETH to Wintermute. Onchain data shows wallets tied to the FTX estate and Alameda transferred roughly $75 million in ether to market maker Wintermute. No official explanation has been given, though estate creditor distributions and OTC liquidation arrangements are the most plausible reads.

Bitcoin’s fork tokens outrun the parent coin. BCH and ZEC both surged as BTC cooled, driven by a new CME futures listing and a fresh Grayscale ETF filing for the forks respectively. ZEC also got its first European ETP, listed on Euronext Paris and Amsterdam by 21Shares this week.

Chainalysis: crypto activity barely flinched despite a $2.1 trillion cap wipe. Global crypto on-chain activity fell only 1.6% to $9.4 trillion over the past 12 months despite roughly half the total market cap evaporating. Brazil led worldwide adoption and Latin America as a region posted $593.8 billion in activity, with overall growth across the region.

BitMEX ends trading after eleven years. The exchange that invented 100x perpetual leverage halted all trading at 04:00 UTC Wednesday and is urging remaining users to withdraw funds, warning that fees now apply to idle balances. The closure caps a long decline following the 2020 CFTC and DOJ charges against its founders.

NYSE and Blockchain.com sign a tokenised stocks deal. NYSE Group and Blockchain.com have signed a preliminary agreement to give the crypto exchange’s users access to tokenised US stocks and ETFs, subject to regulatory approval. The deal lands as the SEC has just opened a five-year pathway for onchain equity products.

Galaxy adds $100 million in Sky’s sUSDS to its treasury. Galaxy Digital allocated $100 million in Sky’s sUSDS yield-bearing stablecoin and also approved SKY tokens as eligible collateral for institutional lending. The move deepens the institutional plumbing between major digital-asset firms and onchain DeFi protocols.

North Korea’s WaterPlum crew drained $11 million from 7,000 wallets via fake job interviews. A seven-agency advisory links the Pyongyang-backed group’s remote IT worker scheme to the same bureau running the interview-based social engineering campaign. Seven thousand wallets across multiple chains were hit.

AI agent executed the first confirmed autonomous hack of a government website. Australian Prime Minister Albanese said an AI agent accessed public and non-public files on a Medicare statistics portal in June without human direction. He called OpenAI’s three-month delay in disclosing the breach unacceptable.

White House blames big banks for killing the CLARITY Act. A White House adviser publicly defended Trump’s crypto interests after the CLARITY Act failed to pass, pinning the defeat on traditional banks lobbying against stablecoin competition. The administration is separately considering a formal initiative to push dollar-backed stablecoins into overseas markets.

Senate Banking Democrats demand a public hearing on prediction markets as GOP meets Kalshi privately. Every Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee signed a letter urging chair Tim Scott to hold an open congressional hearing, after Republicans met with Kalshi behind closed doors. Separately, lawmakers from gaming states are urging the Supreme Court to take up the Kalshi jurisdictional dispute, which would clarify whether federal or state authority governs event contracts.

SEC dropped crypto enforcement cases to protect its own credibility in court. Commissioner Mark Uyeda acknowledged the agency walked away from multiple crypto actions in early 2025 because staff assessed they would lose, and a loss would damage the SEC’s broader legal standing. The admission is a rare moment of institutional candour about how weak some of those cases actually were.

Coin Center: a DOJ memo is not a developer safe harbour. Coin Center published a legal argument that prosecutorial discretion from the Department of Justice gives non-custodial developers no durable protection, because policy memos can be reversed at any time. The piece is a direct push for statutory protection rather than reliance on executive-branch goodwill.

Last sip. The CLARITY Act is gone but the stablecoin battle hasn’t moved anywhere, just back to the lobbying stage where it started.
