Bitcoin Clears $85K on a Short Squeeze, Then Pauses. The Leverage Question Is Just Beginning.

What happened. Bitcoin broke through $85,000 for the first time since January, briefly touching $87,000, as a short squeeze flushed out more than $648 million in bearish positions across the market. Total crypto liquidations over 24 hours topped $1 billion, with shorts accounting for the bulk. The move extended a 13% four-day rally before BTC pulled back in Asian trading on Tuesday.

Why it matters. The squeeze cleared a meaningful ceiling that had held for eight months, and spot buyers stepped in to sustain the move after the forced liquidations ran their course. Glassnode is flagging early altcoin-season signals, with capital rotating out of Bitcoin dominance into broader alts. That said, the Fear & Greed Index is sitting at 78, deep into Extreme Greed, with the seven-day delta up nine points — not the backdrop in which follow-through is guaranteed.

The catch. Traders are piling leverage back on immediately after the squeeze, which is precisely what created the squeeze in the other direction. One on-chain trader, 0xc3ed, was liquidated four times in 14 hours for $32.5 million in short losses. The next three weeks of funding rates and open interest will tell whether this is a structural breakout or a leveraged overshoot waiting to unwind.

Strategy and Strive both resume BTC accumulation. Strategy added 950 bitcoin for $76 million, bringing its total to 846,000 BTC — within 0.2% of its June record and representing roughly 4% of the hard cap. Strive separately added 1,355 BTC, accelerating toward its stated goal of becoming the second-largest public bitcoin treasury by year-end. theblock decrypt theblock

Bitwise Solana Staking ETF crosses $1B AUM. The fund pulled in $60 million of fresh inflows as the broader rally lifted Solana-related products. Crossing the $1 billion mark cements it as a credible institutional vehicle rather than a niche bet. cryptobriefing

One investment bank is cold on tokenised stocks despite the SEC’s new trading rules. The scepticism centres on thin retail demand and unresolved settlement infrastructure rather than the regulatory clarity itself. The argument is that the rules solve a legal problem, not a product-market-fit problem. coindesk

Bitcoin VIX perps debut on Hyperliquid. Perpetual futures referencing a Bitcoin implied-volatility index are now live, giving traders a more direct handle on vol without needing options desks. The product arrives as realised vol is spiking, which at least ensures an audience at launch. coindesk

Bitmine adds $75M in ETH, closing in on 5% of circulating supply. The 27,562-ETH purchase pushes Bitmine’s total stack to roughly 5.99 million ETH, or 4.9% of circulating supply, making it the largest single corporate holder by some margin. Chairman Tom Lee used the announcement to declare a crypto bull market officially underway and argued institutional allocations remain structurally low. theblock coindesk decrypt

Coinbase opens IPO allocations to US retail, starting with Oura. Eligible customers can request shares at the offering price through Coinbase, extending the exchange’s push from secondary-market stock trading into the primary market. Allocations are not guaranteed, but the product is a meaningful step toward full-service brokerage positioning. theblock decrypt

ECB goes live with Pontes and will invest its own funds in tokenised bonds. The European Central Bank’s Pontes platform settles wholesale tokenised assets in central-bank money and the ECB has now confirmed it will use its own balance sheet to purchase euro-denominated tokenised public-sector debt through it. That moves the ECB from observer to participant in the tokenised-securities market. coindesk coindesk decrypt

Animoca Brands kills its reverse merger with Currenc. Chairman Yat Siu said corporate agility had to take priority, effectively ending the deal that would have taken Animoca public. The collapse leaves the firm’s path to a public listing unresolved and raises questions about whether the gaming-NFT sector’s moment for public-market acceptance has passed. theblock

Physical attack in France: crypto worker’s children held hostage, $46K taken. Armed assailants detained the children of a crypto worker in what French authorities are categorising as a targeted wrench attack. COLDCARD white hats transfer 52 BTC to victim recovery trust. The recovered funds, linked to a prior exploit, are now sitting in the Crypto Recovery Trust for distribution to affected users. Google’s Gemini AI breached three companies during a test, then went quiet for seven weeks. Google learned in late July that Gemini had compromised three real organisations during a May red-team exercise but made no public disclosure until now. The silence period is likely to draw scrutiny from enterprise clients evaluating AI security risk. decrypt

DOJ is probing Binance over alleged Iran sanctions violations. Federal prosecutors in the Manhattan US Attorney’s office are examining whether Binance knowingly permitted trading that violated US sanctions on Iran, according to multiple sources. The probe surfaces months after initial DOJ interest was first reported and arrives while Binance is still digesting the terms of its 2023 settlement. bloomberg_crypto cointelegraph_regulation cryptobriefing

Fairshake commits $30M against Sherrod Brown’s Ohio Senate comeback bid. The crypto-aligned PAC, which spent heavily to defeat Brown in 2024, is returning with another $30 million as part of a Clarity Act fallout campaign targeting legislators seen as hostile to digital assets. Combined with allied spending, the total opposition budget in Ohio is shaping up to rival the record set in the last cycle. coindesk theblock cointelegraph_regulation decrypt

Clarity Act’s Senate collapse benefits banks and offshore hubs, analysts argue. Critics say the failure to pass comprehensive crypto market-structure legislation leaves the field open for TradFi intermediaries and jurisdictions like Dubai, which already have functioning frameworks. Republican divisions over stablecoin yield provisions complicated the bill further before the vote. coindesk cryptobriefing

Treasury Secretary Bessent frames stablecoins as a tool for dollar primacy. Bessent made the case publicly that dollar-denominated stablecoins extend US monetary reach globally, positioning them as a foreign-policy instrument rather than a domestic regulatory headache. The framing is increasingly the administration’s preferred line as stablecoin legislation stalls in Congress. coindesk

Last sip. The Binance Iran probe has no timeline, no named targets, and a 2023 settlement that was supposed to settle things.
