Liquid Network’s ‘white-hat’ actors return 3,400 BTC but pocket nearly 600.
What happened. Actors who drained roughly 4,000 BTC from Liquid Network returned approximately 3,400 BTC after Blockstream confirmed its bridge nodes had been patched. The two sides negotiated via PGP-signed messages embedded in on-chain Bitcoin transactions, an unusually transparent back-channel for an incident of this size.
Why it matters. At current prices the returned funds represent around $270 million, making this one of the larger partial recoveries in DeFi history. The fact that Blockstream could negotiate a return at all suggests the actors wanted plausible cover as white-hats, but the nearly 600 BTC they retained makes that framing uncomfortable. Sentiment is sitting at 69, firmly in Greed territory, yet a $320 million bridge exploit drawing a shrug from broader markets says more about normalisation than confidence.
The catch. The ~598.5 BTC still outstanding is not a rounding error: at today’s prices it clears $47 million and there is no announced mechanism to recover it. Blockstream has said the bridge is patched but has not disclosed the root cause publicly, leaving other Liquid integrators to assess their own exposure blind.

Bitcoin stalls at the $83,000 wall as whale flows turn net negative. On-chain data shows large holders flipping to net selling at the $83K resistance level, dragging spot back toward $79,000 to open the week. Rate-hike odds for September are sitting around 60% after Friday’s jobs print, and CPI on Wednesday is the next live test. The weekend altcoin pop, led by a 45% surge in ZEC, has largely unwound.

Oil spikes, bitcoin dips on US strikes against Iranian crude carriers. US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and crude carriers sent oil higher and pushed crypto briefly lower, underscoring bitcoin’s residual sensitivity to risk-off macro shocks. Middle East on-chain activity has meanwhile tripled to $350 billion annually as the Iran conflict accelerates demand for censorship-resistant value transfer, per a Bitcoin Policy Institute report.

Chainlink flies to an eight-month high after Bottomline integration. LINK outperformed the flat broader market after Bottomline, a top-three SWIFT services provider routing around $16 trillion annually, announced it would use Chainlink to connect 600-plus banks to blockchain settlement infrastructure. The move gives LINK a tangible institutional revenue narrative at a moment when most altcoins are bleeding weekend gains.

Bitcoin shows lower yield sensitivity than gold, per new analysis. A fresh study finds bitcoin’s price reaction to Treasury yield moves is now statistically smaller than gold’s, a notable shift for an asset historically treated as a high-beta rate proxy. If it holds through this week’s CPI print it would reinforce the digital-gold narrative more concretely than most correlation charts have managed.

Ethereum roadmap locks in gas payments without ETH and a 2029 quantum-safety target. EIP-8141 advances the ability for users to pay gas in any token, removing one of the last hard UX barriers to onboarding non-ETH holders, with quantum resistance framed as the primary motivation. Separately, the Hegotá upgrade targets full post-quantum L1 security by 2029, starting with account abstraction and censorship-resistance work.

DBS and Citi complete the first weekend cross-border USD settlement via tokenised deposits on SWIFT. The Singapore-to-US payment settled on a Saturday using tokenised deposits on SWIFT’s Digital Ledger, proving around-the-clock cross-border rails for institutional flows without waiting for Monday’s correspondent banking open. It is a narrow but meaningful proof-of-concept for the tokenised-deposit stack that several tier-one banks have been building quietly.

Solana set to triple maximum transaction size, opening room for more complex on-chain logic. The upgrade will allow substantially larger transaction payloads, directly benefiting DeFi protocols and perp DEXes that currently have to split complex operations across multiple transactions. It arrives as Fomo overtook Pump.fun in daily Solana revenue on Friday, pulling in $1.76 million versus $1.1 million, signalling continued activity competition on the network.

Harmony proposes shutting down its L1 and pivoting to AI video. The team cites AI-driven threats to the existing blockchain model as the rationale and is urging users to exit smart contracts before 10 September, with ONE token holders to be migrated to Ethereum. It is a rare case of a live L1 publicly recommending its own wind-down rather than attempting another relaunch after its 2022 bridge hack.

Coldcard Wave 3 exploiter moves $7.7 million, nearly half the haul. Galaxy Research tracked the attacker draining 45% of Wave 3 stolen funds across 293 separate vaults, emptying them largest-first. Total attributed theft across all waves now stands at roughly 1,779 BTC taken from 190 victims and over 8,600 addresses.

Tether’s two-key control structure leaves $91 billion in USDT theoretically exposed, Hacken warns. A Hacken security review found that compromising just two signing keys could grant an attacker administrative control over the entire USDT supply. The report upgraded Tether’s overall BluChip rating but flagged the key management architecture as a critical single point of failure that has not been addressed.

Irish organised crime units storing crypto keys in private vault rentals. Ireland’s Criminal Assets Bureau says gangs are placing hardware wallets and seed phrases in rented safety deposit boxes alongside cash and passports, making seizure significantly harder than seizing exchange accounts. The trend points to a broader professionalisation of crypto operational security among criminal networks.

UK’s FCA reportedly weighing a lift on the retail prediction-markets ban. The Times reports the regulator is reconsidering the 2019 prohibition on binary options and related financial prediction products for retail investors. Any reversal would open a significant market for platforms like Polymarket to operate in the UK without the current regulatory overhang.

Arthur Hayes calls on Trump to veto the CLARITY Act over Bitcoin concerns. Hayes argues the bill’s regulatory framing would structurally disadvantage Bitcoin relative to other digital assets by embedding definitions that suit securities-style frameworks. The post escalates pressure on the White House ahead of any final vote, with the crypto industry far from unified on the legislation.

Philippines central bank proposes pausing new payment operator registrations and tightening VASP oversight. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas draft would freeze onboarding of new payment operators while imposing enhanced transaction monitoring and limits on arrangements involving virtual asset service providers. It signals a meaningful tightening of the Philippines’ previously permissive crypto payments corridor.

Malone Lam plea hearing set for Tuesday in the $245 million Bitcoin theft case. The hearing in Washington DC comes nearly two years after Lam’s Miami arrest and marks a key procedural step in one of the largest crypto theft prosecutions on record. A plea agreement, if entered, would likely involve significant cooperation terms.

Last sip. The Liquid Network bridge is patched, the bulk of the funds are back, and nobody has explained how 4,000 BTC left in the first place.
