Liquid Network Halted After Purported White-Hats Drain $320 Million in Bitcoin From the Sidechain
theblock coindesk bloomberg_crypto
What happened. Blockstream’s Liquid Network, a Bitcoin federation sidechain used by exchanges for faster BTC settlement, has been paused after unknown actors withdrew approximately $320 million in LBTC. The parties behind the withdrawal claim they acted as white-hats exploiting a vulnerability before a malicious actor could. Exchanges have suspended LBTC deposits and withdrawals while Blockstream attempts to make contact with those responsible.
Why it matters. Liquid sits beneath a meaningful slice of exchange settlement infrastructure, so a prolonged pause creates real operational friction for desks relying on it for interexchange BTC moves. The self-declared white-hat framing does not reduce the immediate damage: funds are out of the federation, the network is halted, and exchange customers are locked out of LBTC flows. The Fear and Greed Index sits at 71 and has risen nine points in a week, meaning this hits at a moment of elevated risk appetite rather than defensive positioning.
The catch. White-hat claims without prior disclosure or a coordinated responsible-disclosure process are difficult to verify and create serious legal exposure for whoever holds the funds. Blockstream has not confirmed the vulnerability exists, nor offered a timeline for resuming the network. Until funds are returned and an independent post-mortem published, exchanges should treat LBTC settlement as unavailable.

Bitcoin ETFs record best monthly inflows in a year. US spot bitcoin ETFs absorbed $987 million in net inflows last week, capping an August total of $3.52 billion, the strongest monthly figure since September 2025. Institutional demand is the cited driver, with the weekly pace roughly double what was seen through much of Q2.

STONK and RAY spike on StonkFun launch. STONK, the native token of Solana launchpad StonkFun, surged roughly 250% to a $140 million market cap after the platform integrated with Raydium’s LaunchLab over the weekend. RAY itself gained more than 40% as the launchpad pulled volume through Raydium and Jupiter.

Gold pulls back on stronger US payrolls. Friday’s payrolls beat lifted rate-hike expectations and pushed gold lower as yield-bearing assets drew flows. The move has macro relevance for crypto insofar as a sustained dollar-strength, higher-for-longer narrative tends to cap risk-asset multiple expansion.

Harmony shuts its L1 and pivots to Ethereum-based AI video. Harmony has announced a full sunset of its Layer 1, proposing a token migration to Ethereum as part of a new ‘remix economy’ concept targeting AI video creators. The team says it will assist validators through the transition, though the commercial logic of the pivot remains thin.

Router Protocol winds down and burns 303 million ROUTE tokens. The Coinbase-backed cross-chain routing protocol is closing after failing to find a buyer, commercialise its tech, or land a licensing deal. The decision to burn the token supply rather than dump it on the market is the one piece of considered exit behaviour in an otherwise clean failure.

Coinbase and Better’s BTC-backed mortgages will rehypothecate borrower collateral. The jointly offered bitcoin-backed mortgage product allows the lender to reuse the borrower’s collateral, a standard TradFi mechanism but one that adds a layer of counterparty risk for BTC holders who thought they were simply pledging an asset. The terms of collateral reuse and borrower protections have not been fully detailed publicly.

Prediction markets may be heading for a Supreme Court hearing. Legal wrangling over whether prediction markets constitute gambling or financial instruments is working its way up the US court system, with analysis suggesting the Supreme Court may eventually need to settle the question. The outcome would materially affect platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket’s US regulatory posture.

Last sip. Blockstream has not confirmed what the vulnerability was, and the people holding $320 million in bitcoin have not yet proven they intend to give it back.
