Cronos Shuts Down the Entire Chain After $75 Million Tectonic Exploit
coindesk decrypt bloomberg_crypto
What happened. An attacker manipulated token collateral prices on Tectonic, the Crypto.com-linked lending protocol on Cronos, borrowing and draining roughly $75 million. Validators halted the entire Cronos chain after approximately $6 million made it to Ethereum, freezing the remainder on-chain.
Why it matters. Halting a live L1 to contain an exploit is an extraordinary step, and one that cuts both ways: it stopped further bleed but demonstrated that the chain’s decentralisation claims have a hard ceiling. The Fear & Greed Index sits at 69 despite the incident, suggesting the broader market is treating this as chain-specific rather than systemic, though that complacency has burned people before.
The catch. The chain had still not resumed block production at time of writing, leaving all Cronos users and DeFi positions in limbo. Separately, More Markets on Flow suffered a $9.3 million drain via a similar overborrowing vector using an Ankr liquid staking token, suggesting the collateral-manipulation playbook is making the rounds this cycle.

XRP ETFs nine-day inflow streak, $1.6 billion and counting. Spot XRP funds have pulled in $1.6 billion in cumulative net inflows since launch, with Goldman Sachs, Jane Street and Millennium among the largest disclosed holders in Q2 filings. CME’s share of XRP futures open interest has also jumped sharply as the token posted a 40% weekly gain, a sign that institutional flow is moving from spot into regulated derivatives.

Bitcoin’s best August since November 2024, unfazed by Iran strikes. BTC held above $78,000 even as US strikes on Iran rattled equity markets and pushed oil higher. The hawkish Fed repricing, with September hike odds now around 58–60%, weighed on altcoins more than on Bitcoin, which is on course for roughly a 25% monthly gain.

Robinhood Chain flips Ethereum and Base in daily fees. Robinhood Chain recorded $989 million in single-day DEX volume in August and surpassed Ethereum and Base in fee generation, fuelled by memecoin trading and tokenised stock pairs. The revenue share shift is notable given how young the chain is, though the activity mix is heavily speculative rather than productive.

Strategy back in the market with $370 million in BTC. Michael Saylor’s firm bought 4,603 BTC at an average of $80,318, its first purchase since June, lifting total holdings to 845,050 BTC worth over $66 billion. The re-entry, branded ‘We’re back’, coincided with Strive adding 1,800 BTC to become the fifth-largest public bitcoin treasury, with TD Cowen raising its ASST price target accordingly.

Hyperliquid in advanced talks with Kraken parent Payward for US perps access. Payward has reportedly outlined the proposed structure to the CFTC, routing Hyperliquid’s perpetual futures through its US-regulated Bitnomial entity, though regulatory sign-off is still pending. The talks follow Trump’s public push to bring the platform onshore, and North Korean wallet activity on Hyperliquid noted in parallel adds some urgency to the compliance framing.

Polymarket raises $1 billion at a $21 billion valuation, led by Trump Jr’s firm. The prediction market’s latest round is led by Donald Trump Jr’s investment vehicle, a politically charged cap table that will draw regulatory scrutiny given the platform’s proximity to US elections and policy events. At $21 billion, Polymarket is now valued more richly than many mid-tier crypto exchanges.

ICE partners with tZERO and takes a stake to build tokenised securities infrastructure. NYSE parent Intercontinental Exchange will use tZERO as a design partner for its tokenised securities platform and has invested in tZERO’s current financing round. It is one of the more concrete steps from a traditional exchange heavyweight toward on-chain settlement, rather than another pilot announcement.

Bitmine adds 53,501 ETH as Tom Lee calls ether the best-performing macro asset. The $131 million purchase is Bitmine’s largest since June, bringing its treasury to 5.9 million ETH, roughly 4.9% of circulating supply. Lee’s framing of ETH as a macro asset rather than a pure risk trade is a notable rhetorical shift as the firm continues accumulating at scale.

Cronos chain halted, Tectonic lending protocol drained for $75 million. Full details in today’s lead. Chain remains offline at time of writing.

More Markets on Flow loses $9.3 million via Ankr LST overborrowing. An attacker used an Ankr liquid staking token alongside E-mode to overborrow and drain approximately $9.3 million in WFLOW from the lending reserve, per Blockaid. The vector mirrors the Tectonic attack, pointing to collateral price manipulation as the method of the moment.

North Korean wallets moving tens of millions through Hyperliquid. On-chain tracking shows addresses linked to DPRK-affiliated actors shifting significant sums across Hyperliquid, complicating the platform’s push for US regulatory approval. The activity is being cited by former officials who warn that offshore perps platforms lacking AML controls are a national security concern.

Kalshi permanently bans George Santos over State of the Union self-dealing. The prediction market found that Santos placed large trades on whether he would attend the State of the Union, then made false statements to move prices, netting roughly $18,000. It is Kalshi’s first-ever lifetime ban, and the clarity of the market manipulation case will likely be used as a template for future enforcement actions on prediction platforms.

Ireland locks crypto out of its new tax-advantaged retail investment accounts. The accounts, which target the roughly €180 billion sitting in low-yield savings, will cover stocks, bonds, funds, ETFs and insurance products but explicitly exclude crypto and derivatives as higher-risk assets. The scheme opens next year and represents a meaningful missed onramp given the deposit pool it is designed to mobilise.

Russia’s new crypto exchange rules take effect today, Sberbank forecasts $46 billion first-year volume. The country’s legalisation framework kicks in on 1 September 2026, and Sberbank’s deputy chairman estimates regulated exchange trading could hit 4 trillion rubles in year one. The bank is also preparing to add ETH and USDT as eligible collateral for crypto-backed loans, pending final regulatory sign-off.

Former SEC and CFTC officials call for lighter-touch rules to bring crypto perps onshore. With the Clarity Act stalled, agency alumni are pushing for a framework that does not replicate the full burden of traditional derivatives regulation, warning that a $90 trillion offshore perps market will stay offshore if compliance costs are prohibitive. Thailand’s SEC is moving in the opposite direction, proposing that retail-accessible overseas crypto derivatives must trade on centrally cleared, qualifying exchanges.

What else is grinding?
- Solana validators have doubled the pace of inflation cuts even as network fees hit a record, meaning less new SOL supply but also lower validator rewards for the same work.
theblock - Luke Dashjr has left the Ocean mining pool following an internal dispute over the direction of Bitcoin mining, ending a prominent association with the pool he helped build.
coindesk - OpenSea has finally added Solana NFT trading, more than four years after its initial beta on the chain.
theblock - Japan’s FSA has requested that trust-type stablecoins be exempted from mandatory tax filings starting in fiscal 2027, aiming to make them more practical as everyday payment tools.
cointelegraph_regulation - DeFi Development Corp is proposing a $20 million preferred stock offering to buy more SOL, following the treasury accumulation playbook that Strategy popularised.
theblock - Zcash researchers say private shielded transactions could drop from a three-second proof time to under 200 milliseconds with a new proving system currently in development.

Last sip. Cronos validators can halt a chain, but nobody has yet explained what happens to the $69 million still sitting on it.
