Bitcoin and ether ETFs log $1.1B inflow week — their best since April — with the Coldcard hack quietly driving custody fears into ETF demand.

What happened. US-listed bitcoin and ether ETFs combined for roughly $1.1 billion in net inflows last week, the strongest five-day run since April. Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas directly linked the sustained bid to the Coldcard wallet exploit, with several bitcoin funds posting inflows on every day since the hack broke. Daily totals tapered toward the end of the week, but the streak held.

Why it matters. The Coldcard incident appears to have accelerated a custody-risk narrative that pushes retail and semi-institutional money toward regulated wrappers rather than self-custody. That is an odd tailwind: fear driving inflows. The Fear & Greed Index sits at 29, deep in Fear territory, yet the ETF bid is the strongest in months — exactly the kind of counter-trend that tends to precede short squeezes.

The catch. BlackRock flagged that bitcoin is decoupling from equities, framing it as healthy diversification, but that narrative only holds if spot price follows the ETF money. Bitcoin is still pinned just above $65,000, volatility is compressing, and put premiums remain elevated — the market is buying the wrapper without fully committing to the asset. CME data showing hedge funds flipping from structural shorts to net longs adds conviction to the bull case, but conviction and price are not yet the same thing.

Markets

Hedge funds flip net long bitcoin on CME for the first time in months. Positioning data shows institutional players have abandoned the structural short that defined most of 2026, now tilting outright long as rate-hike bets fade. BlackRock separately called bitcoin’s break from equity correlation a sign of maturing diversifier status. On-chain data also shows long-term holders — ‘strongest hands’ by conviction metrics — accumulating again after a period of distribution. coindesk theblock coindesk

Strategy sells 1,690 BTC and builds a $4.75B cash cushion as investors demand more than pure bitcoin exposure. Michael Saylor’s firm offloaded roughly $109 million in bitcoin and raised a further $653 million through MSTR share issuance, bringing its dollar reserve to $4.65 billion. CEO Phong Le called the bitcoin sales irrelevant to market pricing given daily trading volumes. The cash build suggests Strategy is managing investor nervousness about leverage concentration, not just accumulating. theblock coindesk coindesk decrypt

XRP slips back below conviction levels as the legislative tailwind from July evaporates. The token is trading just above $1.00, caught under a death cross with no immediate catalyst to reset the trend. The CLARITY Act delay, covered in On the Hill, removed the near-term regulatory re-rating that had lifted XRP through July. Watch whether the White House’s September push revives the narrative. decrypt

Riot Platforms surges 25% after-hours on a $9.1B compute deal with Anthropic. Anthropic has contracted Riot for AI computing infrastructure under a ten-year agreement, with two five-year extension options that could push total contract value to $16.1 billion. The deal cements Riot’s pivot away from pure bitcoin mining toward becoming an AI infrastructure supplier, a trend also visible at Keel, which shuttered all US mining operations this week. Riot’s stock move is the sharpest single-session gain the company has posted in years. theblock cryptobriefing

Mastercard acquires stablecoin infrastructure firm BVNK for $1.8 billion. BVNK built its business on business-to-business stablecoin settlement rails, and Mastercard’s acquisition gives the payments giant direct plumbing into the corporate stablecoin stack. The deal is one of the largest crypto-native acquisitions by a traditional financial institution and underscores how seriously card networks are treating stablecoin settlement as a replacement for correspondent banking. Bitwise’s head of research called Circle similarly mispriced in the same week, noting stablecoin market caps are on a path toward trillions. coindesk coindesk cryptobriefing

Vitalik’s updated Ethereum roadmap centres on quantum resistance, privacy, and AI-assisted formal verification. Buterin described the package as Ethereum’s third major iteration, with post-quantum cryptography and enhanced privacy moving from aspiration to near-term engineering priority. AI-assisted formal verification would let developers machine-check protocol logic at a scale not currently possible. The roadmap does not include a delivery timeline, but it signals where core devs will be focused heading into 2027. theblock decrypt

Bybit sues North Korea over the $1.5B Lazarus Group hack and wins an asset-freeze order. The exchange filed suit and secured a court order freezing assets, though the amounts recovered so far — $48.4 million recovered, $30.5 million frozen — are a fraction of the February 2025 theft. The legal action is largely symbolic given North Korean state actors rarely hold attachable assets in reachable jurisdictions, but it establishes a litigation precedent for exchange hacks attributed to nation-state actors. Bybit says the effort is ongoing. decrypt

Coinsbuy loses $8M in a coordinated dual-chain attack across Tron and Ethereum. The attacker drained funds from the exchange and routed proceeds through both networks before moving into other exchanges, with later wallet activity providing investigators partial breadcrumbs. The method suggests pre-planned liquidity fragmentation to complicate tracing. No recovery announced. coindesk decrypt

BTCPay Server discloses a critical exploit; supporters post up to 3 BTC in recovery bounty. The project credits Craig Raw and the Bitcoin Red Team fund for reporting the vulnerability, and says AI tooling may have been used to find it. A recovery bounty of up to 3 BTC has been offered for funds lost in exploitation. Operators running self-hosted BTCPay instances should treat patching as urgent. theblock

North Korea’s Kimsuky unit now uses generative AI to craft crypto-themed phishing documents. The group is producing AI-generated lure content themed around digital assets, investment strategies, and fintech services, lowering the quality bar required for convincing social engineering. This is a capability expansion, not a new actor: Kimsuky has been targeting crypto for years, and AI tooling makes their volume and polish harder to screen. Separately, Immunefi recorded $110 million in crypto losses to hacks in July alone. theblock theblock

SEC schedules a Friday open meeting to propose tailored ‘Reg Crypto’ offering rules. The meeting is a direct response to the CLARITY Act’s Senate delay, with the Commission moving to fill the regulatory vacuum through rulemaking rather than waiting on Congress. Reg Crypto would create a bespoke offering framework for qualifying digital asset issuances, a significant structural shift from the current posture of retrofitting existing securities law. The proposal still needs to go through notice-and-comment, but the timeline signals the SEC is not sitting idle while September plays out. coindesk cryptobriefing

White House vows to get the CLARITY Act across the line in September after Senate punts. Advisor Patrick Witt said the administration will continue negotiating with Democrats through recess, targeting the September 15 cloture vote that Majority Leader Thune has already filed for. The bill needs at least seven non-Republican votes to break a filibuster, a threshold that has not yet been tested. Industry reaction ranged from disappointed to resigned, with several groups calling the delay a strategic error given current market momentum. cointelegraph_regulation cryptobriefing theblock cointelegraph_regulation

NYT reports a UK money-laundering suspect moved $100M into Trump’s World Liberty Financial. The buyer, identified as Guren ‘Bobby’ Zhou through the Aqua 1 entity, purchased World Liberty Financial tokens in 2025; British officials told the Times the investigation remained active as of late July. Zhou has not been charged. The report lands at a particularly inconvenient moment for an administration pushing crypto legislation and positions itself as a pro-industry regulatory reformer. theblock cointelegraph_regulation

UK’s FCA moves to build a regulatory framework for tokenised gold, including collateral use in wholesale markets. The regulator is drafting rules that would govern how tokenised gold products are issued and how they can be used as collateral, positioning London to retain its status as the global centre for bullion trading as the asset migrates on-chain. The framework would bring tokenised commodities under formal FCA perimeter for the first time. No consultation timeline has been published. coindesk cointelegraph_regulation

Last sip. Seven Senate votes stand between the CLARITY Act and a floor debate, and no one is quite sure who’s counting them.
