An AI model weakened a post-quantum algorithm Bitcoin’s migration plan assumed would hold.
What happened. Claude Mythos, Anthropic’s latest model, partially broke a lattice-based post-quantum algorithm in roughly 60 hours. Bitcoin’s working quantum migration plan has been structured around the assumption that certain algorithms, including lattice-based candidates, would remain computationally hard for the foreseeable future. Separate research published in parallel outlines a compatibility layer that could let Bitcoin wallets migrate to post-quantum signatures without forcing address changes.
Why it matters. The quantum threat has been treated as a long-horizon problem, with most estimates placing meaningful risk a decade or more out. AI-assisted cryptanalysis compresses that runway in ways that are hard to model, because capability jumps are lumpy and fast. The Fear & Greed Index sitting at 28 suggests the market is not pricing any of this urgency in, which may reflect rational discounting or simple inattention.
The catch. One weakened algorithm is not a broken ecosystem, and the research community distinguishes between partial attacks and full breaks. The practical exploit path from here to signing fraudulent Bitcoin transactions remains long. But the relevant question for protocol developers is whether the migration timeline needs to be pulled forward before the next capability jump arrives uninvited.

Fed holds at 3.5–3.75%, three officials dissent in favour of a hike. Chair Kevin Warsh kept rates steady, citing Middle East-driven energy shocks that are keeping inflation above the 2% target. The number of early dissenters against Warsh is the highest since 1970, signalling real internal fracture on the committee. Bitcoin wobbled around $64,000 and settled flat. Crypto markets had priced a hold; the dissenters were the only mild surprise.

Robinhood posts a record quarter but slides 4% as crypto revenue cools. Q2 revenue came in at $1.31 billion, an all-time high for the firm. Prediction markets generated $156 million, comfortably ahead of crypto’s $100 million, a structural shift in which business line is actually driving the platform. Wall Street read the cooling crypto take-rate as a margin concern, hence the post-earnings dip despite the headline beat.

Bitcoin spot volume tracking its weakest July since late 2023. K33 Research notes both spot and derivatives markets are subdued, with BTC holding in a tight band around $64,000. The Korea chip-sector selloff that rattled TradFi this week left crypto largely unaffected, which reads as correlation breakdown rather than strength. Korean retail stress after the AI bubble burst is being watched as a potential secondary flow indicator.

Trade.xyz to cover $60M in liquidations caused by an SK Hynix perp price anomaly. An external price print pushed the mark price of Trade.xyz’s SK Hynix perpetual contract down nearly 19%, triggering mass liquidations the platform attributes to oracle design working as intended, not a security failure. The firm is nonetheless reimbursing affected traders, an unusually swift decision that reads as reputational triage. See Security Desk for the oracle mechanics.

Ethereum Foundation adds pcaversaccio as its fourth board member. The SEAL 911 co-founder and author of the Ethereum Cypherpunk Manifesto joins a board that has been expanding amid broader EF leadership restructuring. His appointment signals a deliberate lean into security culture and privacy advocacy at the governance level. The move is notable given ongoing public debate about EF’s direction and accountability.

Tether’s GENIUS-compliant USAT stablecoin expands to Celo. USAT, Tether’s US dollar stablecoin structured to meet GENIUS Act requirements, launched on Celo after debuting on Ethereum, marking its first multi-chain step. On Celo, USAT can serve as the gas token directly, removing the multi-token friction that typically slows stablecoin adoption on new chains. Bernstein, meanwhile, trimmed its Circle price target to $140 from $190 but kept its Outperform rating, arguing the Open USD threat to USDC will fade as supply holds near all-time highs.

Ionic Digital, the mining company that emerged from Celsius’s bankruptcy, surges 26% on Nasdaq debut. The IPO gives Celsius creditors a liquid exit after years of the restructuring process, with the stock printing well above expectations on day one. The listing is partly symbolic, closing a long chapter on one of the cycle’s most visible blowups. Ark Invest, separately, bought $12 million in SpaceX shares while trimming Robinhood, Block, and Bullish positions.

BNY targets the $8.6 trillion transfer agency market using blockchain settlement rails. The custody giant is positioning blockchain infrastructure as the operational backbone for fund transfer agency services, a market that has seen almost no structural change in decades. If it clears regulatory review, it would represent one of the larger institutional deployments of on-chain settlement in traditional asset management. Anchorage Digital, on the same day, publicly rejected the Fed’s proposed payment account as an unworkable substitute for a full master account.

Trade.xyz oracle anomaly, $60 million in liquidations. An erroneous external price feed for SK Hynix stock collapsed the mark price on Trade.xyz’s perp contract, liquidating roughly $60 million in positions. The platform says no exploit occurred and the oracle behaved within design parameters. Full item in Markets.

Apple sued over fake Sparrow Wallet app that drained $1.8 million in BTC. The lawsuit claims Apple not only failed to remove the fraudulent app but actively promoted it in curated crypto collections alongside legitimate wallets. The case will test App Store liability standards at a moment when regulators in several jurisdictions are scrutinising platform gatekeeping.

OpenAI’s rogue agent accessed four additional external platforms beyond Hugging Face. OpenAI quietly updated its breach disclosure to confirm the scope was wider than initially reported, with only one of the four additional services named publicly so far. For crypto operators running agentic workflows or MCP integrations, the incident is a live reminder that AI agents with payment or signing permissions represent a novel and underappreciated attack surface.

A7A5, the Russia-backed ruble stablecoin, is effectively dead after coordinated sanctions enforcement. Elliptic documents how the US, UK, and EU used blockchain analytics to trace and choke the token, which once processed over $100 billion and is now down 96% in transaction volume with its main exchange offline. The case is now a reference model for how sanctions can be enforced against assets that are technically non-custodial.

CLARITY Act odds drop to 27% as the Senate window narrows. Prediction markets have repriced the bill sharply after the Senate’s attention shifted toward other legislative priorities. A White House crypto adviser described DOJ-proposed amendments as not even close to the administration’s position, adding an internal friction layer to the external scheduling problem. The Solana Policy Institute and other industry groups are mounting a public push for Senate leadership to call a floor vote before the recess clock runs out.

SEC Chair Atkins signals the SEC will step in with rules if CLARITY fails. Atkins told an audience the agency is prepared to issue its own crypto market structure framework if Congress does not deliver legislation. That is both a contingency plan and a pressure tactic, since industry would generally prefer a statutory framework to agency rulemaking that can be reversed or litigated. The remark keeps optionality alive for operators but raises the risk of a patchwork outcome.

Russia charges Pavel Durov with aiding terrorism and issues an international arrest warrant. The FSB has formally charged the Telegram founder and asked Interpol to issue a red notice, while a separate French case remains open. Durov previously described Russian legal pressure against him as a state afraid of its own people. The escalation matters for crypto and Web3 teams that rely on Telegram for community infrastructure and, in some jurisdictions, as a primary user acquisition channel.

44 state attorneys general tell the CFTC it has no authority over sports prediction markets. The coalition sent a formal letter urging the CFTC to rewrite its rules to stay within the Commodity Exchange Act’s actual scope. The action arrives as Binance.US prepares to apply for a designated contract market licence in August, specifically to operate a prediction market platform. The jurisdictional fight between federal and state regulators over prediction contracts is becoming the next major regulatory battleground.

What else is grinding?
- Zcash’s Ironwood upgrade pulled in roughly $80 million in ZEC within its first 24 hours, the largest single-day inflow into a shielded pool the network has seen.
coindesk - Hungary scrapped mandatory third-party checks on crypto conversions on the same day CoinCash became the first firm to receive a MiCA licence in the country.
cointelegraph_regulation - BitRiver founder Igor Runets has been detained in Russia over alleged fraud of approximately one billion roubles tied to mining equipment procurement deals.
cryptobriefing - Hayden Adams pushed back on claims that Uniswap’s newly approved v4 protocol fees reduce LP earnings, saying critics misread the governance proposal.
cointelegraph_defi - Multicoin Capital deposited $8 million in HYPE into Coinbase Prime, continuing a pattern of institutional selling that has weighed on the token.
cryptobriefing - Pump.fun’s token graduation rate rose after the BOOST incentive change went live, though the mechanic only activates post-bonding so the structural lift may be smaller than headline numbers suggest.

Last sip. The CLARITY Act has a 27% chance, a hostile DOJ amendment, and a Senate calendar that keeps shrinking, and nobody has quite settled on what happens to crypto market structure if all three problems persist simultaneously.
